There are many ways to volunteer for literacy.  We can help you find the role that is right for you.

Roles

Tutor

Do you want to help someone improve their basic literacy skills?

YLC provides FREE training, materials and support for volunteer tutors. No teaching experience is required to be a tutor. We have materials to help you get started.

YLC’s Tutor Training Workshop (virtual or in-person) covers:

  • Information about the Yamaska Literacy Council
  • Literacy statistics and issues
  • Sensitivity to adults with low literacy skills
  • Tutoring techniques and materials
  • Goal setting and assessment
  • Lesson planning
Volunteer

Help someone improve their literacy and essential skills.

Trained tutors are matched with a student. They are provided with tools and support to help them in their role.

YLC has hosted a prison literacy tutoring program in Cowansville since 2000. If you are interested in this program, contact us (currently on hold during COVID).

Scribe

Help someone read and understand documents, fill out forms and applications, etc.

Trainer

YLC needs workshop facilitators.

We are always looking for pertinent topics for our members.

Director

YLC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

We need a variety of skills including, accounting, fund raising, promotions, and media relations. Do you have a skill to share?

General
