Volunteers are the cornerstone of YLC!

There are many ways to volunteer for literacy.  We can help you find the role that is right for you.

Do you want to help someone improve their basic literacy skills?

YLC provides FREE training, materials and support for volunteer tutors. No teaching experience is required to be a tutor. We have materials to help you get started.

YLC’s Tutor Training Workshop (virtual or in-person) covers:

  • Information about the Yamaska Literacy Council
  • Literacy statistics and issues
  • Sensitivity to adults with low literacy skills
  • Tutoring techniques and materials
  • Goal setting and assessment
  • Lesson planning

Help someone improve their literacy and essential skills.

Trained tutors are matched with a student. They are provided with tools and support to help them in their role.

YLC has hosted a prison literacy tutoring program in Cowansville since 2000. If you are interested in this program, contact us (currently on hold during COVID).

Help someone read and understand documents, fill out forms and applications, etc.

YLC needs workshop facilitators.

We are always looking for pertinent topics for our members.

YLC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

We need a variety of skills including, accounting, fund raising, promotions, and media relations. Do you have a skill to share?

We can work with you to find a role that is a right fit for you and for YLC.
