YLC MISSION:

  • Enriching lives through literacy

YLC OBJECTIVES:

  • to help adults acquire reading,riting, numeracy and other life skills in order to meet their goals;
  • to train volunteers who provide tutoring that is free, confidential and meets individual needs;
  • to provide outreach and service to individuals and families in partnership with other organizations.

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES:

1. Full Member

  • must be an active YLC student or tutor, or volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per year 
  • is entitled to attend Annual General Meetings (AGMs), and Special General Meetings (SGMs) of the Yamaska Literacy Council and to vote.

2. Supporting Member

  • pays an annual membership fee of $10;
  • is entitled to receive newsletters and attend events;
  • is not obligated to contribute any volunteer hours; and
  • is not entitled to vote

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Tutor
Tutor
  • Volunteers tutor adults and older youth to help them improve their literacy skills.
  • Tutors must complete the Volunteer Orientation and Tutor Workshop.
Board Director
Board Director
  • The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring that YLC fulfills its mandate. Duties include attending regular board meetings every two months and participating on at least one (1) committee. Directors serve a two-year term and are elected at the Annual General Meeting, held in the fall.
  • Directors must be members of YLC and complete the Orientation Session.
General Volunteer
General Volunteer
  • General volunteers help increase awareness of the Yamaska Literacy Council and the services it offers. Duties may include participating in public awareness events, distributing publicity materials, participating in the community radio show, etc.
  • General members perform tasks that do not involve direct involvement with the students. Duties may involve room setup for events, telephoning other members, helping out with mailings, serving on Board committees, etc.
  • General volunteers myst complete the three (3) hour YLC Orientation session.
Mentor
Mentor
  • Tutors provide support for newly train tutors by matching them with experienced tutors. The goals are to encourage discussion, to provide a helpful atmosphere and increase the comfort level of new tutors
Trainer

  • Trainers train new volunteers to tutor students. Duties include preparation for and delivery of basic and supplementary literacy tutor workshops, and keeping up to date with training and tutoring requirements
